SA SCHOOLS SQUASH
ELIGIBILITY FOR SELECTION TO SA SCHOOLS SQUASH TEAMS IN 2023
Squash SA (Not SA SCHOOLS SQUASH) will take responsibility for the U19 age group selection with regard to selection for the World Junior Championships (WJSC) for 2023, should Squash SA decide to send players to the event. They will determine numbers in this regard and the event will fall entirely under the jurisdiction of Squash South Africa. For this reason, SA Schools squash will not select any U19 teams for participation in the World Junior Championships in 2023. (both individual and team events.)
SA Schools Squash will select the following:
1. An SA Schools Top Ten ranking for U19, U16 & U14 (boys and girls)
2. The Top 6 Under 16 Boys and Girls and the Top 10 Under 19 Boys and Girls will be invited to participate in an overseas tour to Malaysia in December 2023 (Departure may be late November 2023 – this is dependent on the Malaysia tournament dates.)
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE ABOVE-MENTIONED ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. Participation in the FOLLOWING THREE COMPULSORY NATIONAL QUALIFYING EVENTS for selection to the SA Schools Squash Top Ten rankings for U19, U16 and U14 and for the SA Schools U16 & 19 Teams for the SA Schools Tour to Malaysia.
• The BLOEMFONTEIN OPEN from 2 - 5 March 2023, (Closing date for submission of entries is 13 February 2023) ENTER ONLINE at www.squashevents.co.za
• The SA Schools’ Closed Event in Johannesburg from 14 – 16 April 2023. Note that the SA Schools Squash Closed Event will be by invitation and is for the U19, U16 and U14 age groups only. NB! In order to be eligible to be invited to play in the SA Closed event, players need to have played in the Bloemfontein Open. (Closing date for submission of entries is 17 March 2023.) ENTER ONLINE at www.squashevents.co.za
NOTE that a maximum of 4 players per major region per age group per gender and 2 players per Country region per age group per gender may enter this event – to be verified by regional chairpersons. The SA Schools Squash selectors also reserve the right to invite ‘wildcard’ entries should they feel that this is appropriate and justified. The entry fee will be R450. For full rules please see entry form. ). NO late entries will be accepted.
• The annual SA Schools Squash Inter-provincials (IPT’s) from 24 – 28 June 2023.
2. Participation in your home region’s Closed and Open events is also COMPULSORY (if these tournaments exist in your region). Enter as per your region/province’s requirements.
The final SA Schools Top Ten rankings and the SA Schools U16 Internal Tour touring teams will be communicated to regional chairpersons by 15 August 2023.
Important details pertaining to Selection Criteria for SA Schools Top Ten Rankings and the SA Schools Squash U16 & 19 Touring teams for 2023
• A player must enter and play in all three compulsory national tournaments AND must complete at least two of the three tournaments in their entirety to be considered for national top 10 selection/ranking.
In other words, a player may withdraw through injury during a tournament once and once only out of the three compulsory national events if he/she is to be considered for national top 10 selection/rankings.
• Note that Players must play in the SA Schools IPT tournament in June/July for their province in order to be considered for selection for SA Schools Squash.
• All of the selection events mentioned above will be taken into account for top 10 rankings. You must also play in your home region’s Open and Closed events – if these exist.
• Conduct on and/or off the court (both at junior and senior tournaments and in senior and/or school league matches), attitude, fitness and commitment are all factors which selectors will take into consideration when selecting teams/ SA Schools Rankings.
• All players and parents/guardians will be required to accept and sign the SA Schools Code of Conduct and Media release form prior to the start of the Bloemfontein Open. Once signed, the Code of Conduct and any subsequent changes/additions to the Code of Conduct will remain applicable for the duration of a player’s participation at all events run under the auspices of SA Schools Squash until such time that they are no longer members/participants of SA Schools Squash. Note that selectors and the SA Schools Executive reserve the right to exclude players from selection to all teams/rankings should their conduct prove unsatisfactory.
• The SA Schools Squash Executive and the SA Schools Squash Selectors reserve the right to revoke any SA Schools rankings in the case of a breach of the Code of Conduct.
• Players will be required to ensure that they have signed the Code of Conduct form prior to the start of the Bloemfontein Open. The form will be available from regional chairpersons. Alternatively, contact Irene Maxton at to request a copy thereof.
• Please be aware that selection decisions for touring teams, the SA Schools Top 10 and any other selections are final and no correspondence will be entertained after the rankings have been announced.
• NOTE that at Under 14 level, only the top three will be announced in order. The remaining seven will be announced alphabetically as being in the top 10.
• In any age group or gender, where there are fewer than 20 players that have fulfilled the criteria in terms of the qualifying tournaments, a minimum of 5 players will be ranked. The remainder will be at the discretion of the selectors to select further players up to a maximum of ten. (This will be dependent on the strength of the players in that age group/gender.)
• The SA Schools Squash selectors reserve the right to request play-offs where these are deemed necessary. No playoffs are permitted at IPT events, but selectors may request play-offs at an academy or between players who live in close proximity to each other.
• The SA Schools Squash Executive Committee reserves the right to revisit any of the rules in highly exceptional circumstances and to apply discretion in highly exceptional circumstances where deemed necessary.
Please be advised that should there be any reason why you cannot fulfil these criteria, you must contact me IN WRITING before 31 January 2023. It will be accepted that all players entering the Bloemfontein Open are fully aware of the selection criteria for the year.
A player who asks for exemption from either the Bloemfontein Open or the SA Schools Closed will need to have a VERY good reason AND will be required to play in another event, which will be nominated by the SA Schools selectors.
• It is expected that all players who wish to be considered for national selection will follow a training programme.
• (A number of programmes have been set up professionally for use by SA Schools Squash and are available, to players who wish to follow these. Upon completion of an initial assessment, recommendations will be made as to the appropriate programme level to be followed for each respective player.)
• These programmes are available from your regional Associations or from the SA Schools Squash Executive.
• Please note that ANY player is welcome to use of the programme – it is not restricted to previously nationally ranked players only.
• The responsibility lies with each player to follow a training programme – the selectors are not expected to monitor players.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SQUASH SA WILL HAVE DIFFERENT SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF ANY TEAMS THEY MAY SELECT IN 2023.
***NB Minors (U18) travelling in and out of South Africa (with or without an adult accompanying them if this adult is not a parent) require an unabridged birth certificate in order to get a visa. This will also need to be presented at airport control points. It can take up to 8 weeks to be processed by Home Affairs. There are several other documents required now. For complete travel regulations in and out of South Africa, please ensure that you consult with the offices of Squash SA and Home Affairs.
Please note that in accordance with the POPI Act, an online media release acceptance is required to be accepted by all participants in any event under the auspices of Squash SA and/or SA Schools Squash, where the possibility exists of photos/live-streaming/other digital media may be published in the press and/or in media releases. This online acceptance will be included in the online Bloemfontein Open Entry forms and acceptance of conditions of entry.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1. Players will be required to check in for each round 30 minutes prior to their scheduled starting time.
2. Players are responsible for organizing their own transport and accommodation.
3. Competitors will be expected to mark and/or referee the match after theirs - even if play runs behind schedule.
4. In all instances the decision of the tournament referee is final.
5. Players MUST expect to play 5 matches over the weekend and cannot expect to be given special treatment because of ANY other weekend commitments- sporting or otherwise.
6. Only the top 4 boys and the top 4 girls in any major region and the top 2 boys and the top 2 girls in any Country region may enter this tournament (verified by regional chairs).
7. All players MUST be currently at HIGH school in South Africa - with the exception of those who are already Under 14 but are still at Primary Schools - i.e. in grade 7.)
8. Protective eyewear is compulsory. No caps or baggies on court. Other dress regulations as per WSF.
9. Players MUST play in the age group in which they wish to be considered for national selection.
10. All payments need to be made directly into the account of SA SCHOOLS SQUASH, whose details are SA SCHOOLS SQUASH, ABSA BANK, BRANDWAG BRANCH, BLOEMFONTEIN, ACCOUNT 630 476 4481, CALL ACCOUNT.
